Most international migrants originate from middle-income countries. In 2020, nearly 177 million international migrants, about 63 per cent of the total, came from a middle-income country. The number of migrants originating from low-income countries, while small compared to other income groups, grew rapidly between 2000 and 2020. Much of this increase was driven by humanitarian crises.
